SUMMARY:Keynote by Hil Malatino: Weathering: Slow Arts of Trans Endurance
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In a moment of profound and widespread transantagonism articulated within both liberal-centrist and alt-right political formations\, how do trans subjects cultivate arts of endurance? This talk develops a concept of weathering\, thinking with the work of contemporary trans writers of fiction (Callum Angus and Torrey Peters)\, visual artists (Nicki Green and Jes Fan)\, and queer and trans theorists (Eric Stanley\, Cam Awkward-Rich\, and Eve Sedgwick). In an historical moment that seems to demand continuous reactive defense\, how are trans subjects building capacities to slow down\, bear with\, and endure? How do practices of collective care support the cultivation of such capacities amidst an urgent now? How are artists figuring the slow and mostly unspectacular art of long-haul trans survival? \n\n\n\nBio: Hil Malatino is Joyce L. and Douglas S. Sherwin Early Career Professor in the Rock Ethics Institute and Assistant Professor of Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies and Philosophy at Penn State. He is the author of Side Affects: On Being Trans and Feeling Bad (Minnesota 2022)\, Trans Care (Minnesota 2020)\, and Queer Embodiment: Monstrosity\, Medical Violence\, and Intersex Experience (Nebraska 2019). His essays have appeared in Hypatia\, TSQ\, Signs\, and other journals and edited volumes. You can contact him at HMalatino@psu.edu.

SUMMARY:Keynote by YV Nay: The Affective Life of Trans Studies as a Political Field in Academia and Activism
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Trans Studies have become an epistemological project that challenges who has the power to intervene in violent knowledge production that shape trans lives. The field promises to form a radical critical intervention in pathologizing\, criminalizing\, marginalizing\, and dehumanizing discourses. But what happens when the promise is not fulfilled? How can we imagine the field’s future considering its myriad legacies of colonialism and eugenics in knowledge production on gender? I suggest thinking through a version of Critical Trans Studies that continues to resist and transform oppressive power systems while building generous and generative worlds in developing knowledge\, political and artistic practices.   \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. YV Nay is Senior Lecturer at the Zürich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW. They were Visiting Professor for Political Science at the University of Vienna\, Postdoctoral Fellow of the Trans Studies Research Cluster at the University of Arizona\, Fellow at the Institute of Cultural Inquiry ICI Berlin\, and Lecturer in Gender Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science LSE\, and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Gender Studies at the University of Geneva. \n\n\n\nDr. Nay’s interdisciplinary and intersectional research and teaching is positioned in gender\, queer and trans studies\, sociology of the family\, social movement studies\, and transformative education science. \n\n\n\nTheir first book entitled Feeling Family. The Affective Paradoxes of the Normalisation of ‘Rainbow Families’ (Zaglossus 2017) is a study of the affective politics of queer families\, which interweaves feminist\, queer\, affect theory and queer of color critique. YV Nay’s current project Affective Activism – The Feeling of Belonging in Transgender Communities\, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation\, focuses on the affective structure of activism within transnational trans communities. Nay is co-editor of The Europa Issue of Transgender Studies Quarterly TSQ (Duke University Press 2021\, 8.2.) and of the collection Affect and Gender (Zaglossus 2014). Contact: yv.nay@zhaw.ch

SUMMARY:CFP: "From Transgender Rage to Trans Joy. Trans Studies through Affective Lens"\, The 8th Nordic Trans Studies Network Conference
DESCRIPTION:Over the past three decades\, trans related issues have evoked strong affects and feelings within and beyond trans communities and activism. The title of this conference does not thus imply a one-directional movement from rage to joy\, but rather aims to cover the vast array of feelings and affective responses arising from\, and guiding\, the actions of trans scholars\, activists and artists working on knowledge production and political struggles concerning trans lives and rights. It acknowledges the struggles\, but also the joy and love in lived realities and embodied experiences of trans\, non-binary and gender non-conforming people. \n\n\n\nBy affective we refer to the rich theoretical field with scholarly work coming from many different fields and approaches – affect as becoming\, un/belonging\, potentiality\, (human and non-human) body´s capacity to affect and be affected. Yet\, it also points to the more mundane intermingling of emotions and feelings connected to trans as an identity\, experience\, positionality\, research field and a political concept. We are welcoming paper presentations as well as artistic work addressing these affective and emotional entanglements. \n\n\n\nPossible paper topics can include\, but are certainly not limited to:• Affective landscapes of trans activism• What does trans* feel like• Gender dysphoria / gender euphoria• Vulnerability of trans bodies• Affective engagements of/with trans culture• Trans community care• T4T as love\, relationships and politics \n\n\n\nWe are inviting contributions to the conference in following forms: \n\n\n\n1. Academic paper presentations on your BA\, MA\, PhD or any other current research\, side projects or possible future projects. Unfinished and work-in-progress papers are also most welcome. \n\n\n\n2. Suggestions for a whole workshop. If you have a certain topic in mind and you would like to gather three to four papers addressing that topic\, send us a short description with information on the papers and presenters included. \n\n\n\n3. Artistic contributions related to the theme of the conference. Send us a description of the work you would like to display with possible technical requirements (in case of video art etc.) as well as name and contact info of each artist. \n\n\n\n4. Suggestions for caucuses. We will reserve space for meeting for particular groups coming from shared experiences of navigating marginalization\, invisibility\, or other experiences of un/belonging. As we all come from different backgrounds and lived realities\, it can be important and healing to have a space for meeting and sharing with others with similar experiences. It will also be possible to suggest a caucus during the conference. \n\n\n\nAll submissions should be around 300 words. Please also include a short bio of each author/artist. Remember to include the names\, affiliations (if applicable) and contact information. \n\n\n\nThe deadline for all submissions is 31.10.2022. \n\n\n\nThe three-day conference will include paper presentations\, keynotes\, artistic contributions\, and a visit to Del LaGrace Volcano´s exhibition at Tampere Art Museum\, including an artist talk\, as well as an evening event with local trans and queer artists. \n\n\n\nThe conference is planned as a face-to-face event\, but presenting via Zoom will also be possible if needed. Please mention in your abstract if you would need to participate online. The conference is free of charge\, but does require registration. Registration will open later in the autumn. \n\n\n\nSend your submission\, and any questions or concerns that come to mind\, to:transrageconference@tuni.fi \n\n\n\nYou can also find the conference event on FB:https://fb.me/e/1TWykgNzH \n\n\n\n*More information on the events\, schedules\, locations etc. coming up later in the autumn*

SUMMARY:Kirjoituskutsu: Liikettä ja vastarintaa: Kirjoituksia queer- ja transaktivismista
DESCRIPTION:Kutsumme kirjoituksia teokseen Liikettä ja vastarintaa: Kirjoituksia queer- ja transaktivismista. Tekstien pituus on enimmillään 8000 sanaa. \n\n\n\nAktivisteja kutsumme osallistumaan teokseen aktivismia kuvaavilla kokemustarinoilla\, esseillä\, manifesteilla\, runoilla\, kuvilla\, sarjakuvilla tai muunlaisilla kontribuutioilla. Aktivistitekstien suosituspituus on 2000–6000 sanaa. Taiteellisten töiden laajuudesta sovitaan erikseen.  \n\n\n\nJos saamme kirjalle hakemamme lisärahoituksen\, voimme maksaa aktivisteille hyväksytyistä kontribuutioista palkkion. Tieteellisistä kirjoituksista palkkioita ei makseta. \n\n\n\nLähetä abstrakti (max 500 sanaa) ehdotuksestasi kirjan toimittajille 31.3.2023 mennessä osoitteeseen affectiveactivism@tuni.fi.  \n\n\n\nTekstien ensimmäisten versioiden deadline on 15.8.2023. Tavoite on julkaista kirja syksyllä 2024. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKirjan toimittavat Affektiivinen aktivismi: queer- ja transmaailmojen luomisen paikat -projektin tutkijat Tuula Juvonen\, Lotta Kähkönen\, Varpu Alasuutari ja Luca Tainio. Suomen Akatemian rahoittamaa projektia toteutetaan Tampereen yliopistossa.

SUMMARY:Translakivaikuttamisen kokemuskahvila
\n\n\n\nTutkimusaineiston keruun vuoksi osallistumiseen on 18 vuoden ikäraja.

SUMMARY:Keynote by Laurel Westbrook: Fostering Fear: The Unintended Consequences of Identity-Based Anti-Violence Activism
DESCRIPTION:Fostering Fear: The Unintended Consequences of Identity-Based Anti-Violence Activism \n\n\n\nThe vast majority of anti-violence activism in the United States occurs within the framework of identity politics. Identity-based movements\, such as those to stop violence against people of color\, women\, and LGBT people\, have become so commonplace as to seem to be a natural way to reduce violence. Moreover\, these movements employ specific emotional strategies to try to gain attention for their cause within the social problems marketplace\, including focusing on extreme and rare forms of violence. These approaches are widely used and accepted. However\, what if they have unintended consequences that run counter to the goal of making lives more livable? In this talk Dr. Laurel Westbrook draws on the findings from their latest book\, Unlivable Lives: Violence and Identity in Transgender Activism to explore this very question. Westbrook finds that the combination of identity politics\, anti-violence work\, and emotion tactics shapes group identity and proposed solutions in ways that can be unintentionally damaging to the very groups it aims to protect. This talk will detail these unintended consequences and then explore alternative ways of reducing violence against transgender people and making more lives livable.  \n\n\n\nLaurel Westbrook Bio \n\n\n\nLaurel Westbrook is a Professor of Sociology at Grand Valley State University. Their research interests include gender\, sexuality\, violence\, social movements\, and surveys. Westbrook is the author of Unlivable Lives: Violence and Identity in Transgender Activism (2021\, Berkeley: University of California Press). Their work has also been published in Gender & Society\, Sexualities\, and Socius\, among others. Westbrook is also Co-Founder and Past Co-Chair of Sociologists for Trans Justice. \n\n\n\nJoin at Tampere University or via stream: https://tuni.cloud.panopto.eu/Panopto/Pages/Sessions/List.aspx?folderID=8417e8c4-64d9-4dce-9695-ae5f009b21d0 \n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue

SUMMARY:Keynote by Elspeth Brown: Care as Affect in Queer and Trans Oral History and Activism
DESCRIPTION:“Care as Affect in Queer and Trans Oral History and Activism” \n\n\n\nThis talk examines queer and trans oral history and archival activism through the lens of care. In the context of trans oral history\, I ask: are these projects (including my own) simply an example of trans visibility that intensifies the surveillance and neoliberal representational politics that is endangering the most marginalized of trans people? Or do these projects offer a different kind of political intervention\, the careful gathering of trans narratives as a form of radical trans care? In the context of queer activism and oral history work\, how has “care” functioned as a key affect in sustaining activism and radical sex practices? \n\n\n\nUsing two oral history projects that I’ve been working on via the LGBQT Oral History Digital Collaboratory (Toronto)—one on trans activism and one on queer sex radicalism—I think through the political implications of my archival and public humanities work through the lens of what Hil Malatino has recently described as an ethos of “trans care.” I offer a set of reflections\, anxieties\, and strategies that have guided myself and my collaborators in pursuing queer and trans public humanities work that resists neoliberal narrative arcs and pursues the creation of a usable past through an ethos of radical trans care and mutual aid. \n\n\n\nElspeth Brown Bio \n\n\n\nElspeth Brown is Professor of History at the University of Toronto and Associate VP Research\, University of Toronto\, Mississauga. Her research concerns modern queer and trans history; the history and theory of photography; and the history of US capitalism. She is the author of Work! A Queer History of Modeling (Duke University\, 2019); co-editor of “Queering Photography\,” a special issue of Photography and Culture (2014); and Feeling Photography (Duke University Press\, 2014)\, among other books. Recent articles include “Transmediation as Radical Pedagogy in Building Queer and Trans Digital Archives\,” forthcoming from the Digital Humanities Quarterly and “Archival Activism\, Symbolic Annihilation\, and the LGBTQ+ Community Archive” (Archivaria 2020).
